Students will be able to recognise design needs and develop an understanding of how current global issues, including integrating technology, impacts on today’s world.

Our contextual challenges at AS will give students the freedom to take design risks and innovate in a situation where it is safe to test and refine ideas, giving them the confidence at A level to further develop these skills in their own design brief with a client/end user.

We’ve listened to your feedback and our specifications aim to demystify the new rules around the new qualification requirements to make sure you know precisely what you have to teach.

We’ve designed the GCSE and AS/A level qualifications together to ensure clear progression of knowledge, understanding and design/making skills so that students will have a coherent experience of moving from the breadth of the GCSE to the specialisation depth of A level and beyond.

To help you plan for 2017 with confidence, we’ll be running a range of free events to support you with the new qualification and the new requirements. We’ll also give you practical free resources to minimise your lesson planning and allow more productive time in the classroom with your students.

What's changing

Design and Technology 2017: What's changing

Our approach

We’re working with the teaching community, higher education and subject associations to design our new qualifications for 2017. Our ambition is to develop a Design and Technology - Product Design qualification that you will know and recognise, but updated in line with the subject content changes and in response to your feedback.

These changes will apply to all awarding organisations’ specifications:

  • Awarding Organisation can only offer three possible endorsements:
    • Product design
    • Fashion & textiles
    • Design Engineering

We have made the decision to offer Product Design.

  • The reduction of NEA from 60% to 50% at AS and A level.

  • Maths and Science skills must be assessed in the new subject context. Maths skills must be 15% of the total qualification and cannot be lower than assessments for the higher tier in a GCSE qualification in mathematics.
  • There are now 4 AOs (previously 2) to allow for a bigger focus on analysis and evaluation.
