BTEC Assessment 2023

On 28 March, JCQ released a document which provides teachers and assessors with the information they need to manage use of AI in assessments. This guidance applies to all our qualifications including vocational qualifications.

Important points to note:

  • centres should explain the importance of students submitting their own independent work
  • centres should ensure that teachers and assessors are familiar with AI tools and their risks
  • centres should consider communications with parents/carers to make them aware of AI
  • students must acknowledge use of AI when used
  • misuse of AI tools is malpractice.

Within the document, there is a list of potential indicators of AI use that may help identify work where students have misused AI.

Please do take a look at this guidance.

The teaching, learning and assessment page for 2022-23 will keep you up to date with the latest news and information to support you delivering BTEC qualifications.

This guide provides learners and parents with information about this year’s arrangements for qualifications regulated by Ofqual.

We have published an updated version of the BTEC Instructions for Conducting External Assessments (ICEA) document.

This document provides you with the information you need to carry out external assessments, including who's responsible at each stage and additional advice around best practices, for BTEC Firsts, Tech Awards, Technicals and Nationals.

Please also refer to the individual subject administrative support guides (ASGs), which you can locate within the Course Materials section of each subject area.

For additional information, see our BTEC External Assessments article.

On 17th March, we wrote to all centres that have learners taking new 2022 Tech Awards assessments this summer to remind them of the option to request extensions, due to industrial action, which has reduced teaching and assessment time for the May series. We sympathise with all the pressures that learners and teachers are currently under and have been providing extensions based on these requests throughout the series.

Some centres have contacted us to ask for further extensions due to further industrial action and additional Bank Holidays. We can confirm, we will accept all submissions of learner marks and work up to the 16th May without the need for extension requests. Your submissions of learner marks and work made by this date will be moderated in time for results day (23rd August for centres and 24th August for learners).

Many centres have been able to work to the initial deadlines or are currently working to the extended deadlines, and we have seen submission of marks and work from centres, which is greatly appreciated. We urge you to continue to submit marks and work as soon as they are ready wherever possible, to support a timely moderation process for your centre.

If you are concerned that your centre will not be able to submit marks and learner work by 16th May, please contact us via the Pearson Support Portal.

When submitting your request please using the following classifications:

  • Request type – Coursework & Controlled/Internal Assessment
  • Category – Deadlines & Dates
  • Sub Category – Extension to Deadline

Please note that special considerations may be requested for individual learners that are affected by circumstances beyond those covered by deadline extensions.

Mark submission and LWT are both accessed via Edexcel Online. Full guidance on submitting marks and learner work via LWT can be found on the Tech Awards 2022 Support Index.

This page provides guidelines on marking internally assessed work for the Pearson set assignments and explains how the moderation process works for the BTEC Tech Awards from 2022.

This support page contains articles on:

  • Registration & Entry processes
  • Access Arrangements & Modified Papers
  • Internal Assessment & Learner Work Transfer (LWT)
  • Quality Assurance
  • Further Support
  • BTEC Tech Awards from 2022 Overview Video

Following your feedback, we will be releasing all Enterprise Pearson Set Assignments one month earlier within each series. This will give you more time to spend preparing for and administering the assessments. From September onwards, the Pearson Set Assignments will be released as follows:

These guides take us up to the cohort starting in September 2024.

Please note that the situation in England, Northern Ireland and Wales is not necessarily the same for all sectors so please do check the correct file.
