May/June 2022 exam series

JCQ have released updated Special Considerations Guidance to cover COVID-19 for Summer 2022. The guidance has been created in line with the latest UKHSA guidance. Candidates should be encouraged to attend examinations as much as possible and where it is safe to do so in line with Government guidelines.

However, if a candidate is staying at home and avoiding contact with others in line with UKHSA guidance at the time of the examination, the candidtae would be considered to be absent from the examination for an acceptable reason and would be eligible for special consideration. This includes candidates who are displaying the symptoms described in the UKHSA guidance as advising them to stay at home (e.g. a high temperature for those aged 18 and under) as well as those with a positive COVID-19 test result. Where a candidate still wishes to attend an examination, despite having symptoms (e.g. a high temperature) or a positive COVID-19 test, the centre should encourage the candidate to follow the UKHSA’s guidance.

The JCQ awarding bodies will be adapting Form 14 - JCQ/ME - Self-certification for candidates who have missed an examination to assist centres in dealing with candidates who are absent from an examination for an acceptable reason in line with the UKHSA guidance. Centres will expect parents, carers and candidates to complete the relevant sections of the form. Centres can verify the candidate’s circumstances, where provided in Form 14, to process an application for special consideration using the category ‘absent candidate’. There is no requirement for a candidate to complete a COVID-19 test to provide evidence of their absence from an examination.

JCQ will be releasing a further set of FAQs but examples can be found on pages 20-21 of the guide.

The Advance Information is now available for:

  • AS and A level Business,
  • GCSE Business
  • International GCSE Business

Training and professional development

We are always looking to recruit examiners across our qualifications. This is an excellent opportunity to gain invaluable insight into assessment and to work with other examiners to get some fresh teaching and learning ideas and approaches for your subject. More information about our vacancies, the application criteria and which subjects are currently recruiting can be found on our assessment associates web page.

You’re not alone. Many teachers have been asking about our plans and thousands of students took our onscreen GCSE mocks last year.

We believe in creating assessments that encourage progress, enable access and inclusion, and enrich learning. This has driven our use of onscreen assessment in over 115 countries for more than a decade and how we approach what’s next.

Our focus: where and how we can use technology to positively impact assessments and students’ lives.

Taking care of Business - Migrant entrepreneurs and the making of modern Britain

Migrant entrepreneurs

Taking Care of Business is a new immersive exhibition at the Migration Museum.

From the food we eat to the clothes we wear, the apps on our phones to the products in our homes, our lives wouldn’t be the same without migrant entrepreneurs. So many of the businesses that are most integral to our lives – from M&S to Rimmel, corner shops to apps – are the products of migration.

Entrepreneurship has always been at the heart of the immigrant experience. For many, starting a business is the only way to survive in a new land, whilst others arrive with an idea and a plan. Immigrants are almost twice as likely to found a business as people born in the UK, while almost half of the UK’s fastest-growing companies have an immigrant founder.

Taking Care of Business puts this vital story at centre stage, highlighting migrant entrepreneurs past and present across a wide range of sectors, from fashion to tech, finance to nightlife

The museum is based in Lewisham Shopping Centre, London SE13 7HB and welcomes educational visits (appropriate for GCSE Business Topic 1.1 and A level Business Topic 1.5).

#BeInBusiness is an online initiative created to support schools and educators, by inspiring greater student inclusion in Business at GCSE and A Level with a series of thought-provoking interviews, real-life case studies, and exciting industry contributions, designed to be widely shared in schools and educational settings.

As part of the campaign, we would like to spotlight a diverse range of perspectives and achievements through an interview series, in which a young business student interviews a diverse business leader.

We would be delighted if one (or more) of your students would be interested in performing these interviews. If you think this would be of interest, please fill in the short form below and we will get in touch with you shortly.

Online schooling and alternative provision

As part of an ongoing piece of work here at Pearson in partnership with the University of West London, we're seeking insights from educators across the country about online learning and alternative provision.

We'd like to hear about your experiences of alternative provision within your own school and how the pandemic may have affected students in such provision.

Please share your thoughts in this survey

We know that many of you will still want to offer International GCSE exams between May/June 2022 and May/June 2023 and we will therefore continue to run the January series in 2023.

This will be the last January International GCSE series.

We're introducing a regular International GCSE November series, first running in November 2023. This series is being introduced to best meet the needs of students requiring International GCSE exam opportunities outside of the full May/June series and it will include International GCSE Business.

There will be no November series in 2022.

Please take a look at the timeline in the document below.

For those candidates cashing in our modular International A Levels this May/June, a reminder that grades from prior series, including TAG grades from May/June 2021, were awarded UMS marks, and so can be aggregated with unit results from May/June 2022 to count towards the final award.

This approach ensures that work produced for TAGs in 2021 can count towards the final grade. This is particularly relevant for International A Level candidates who completed International AS units in May/June 2021.
