June 2021 Business update

In this June update, we have news of the winners of the Be The Future challenge as well as a virtual work experience event for your students in July. There are also training events for A level Business at the end of the month and for both GCSE and International GCSE in July.  Finally, as thoughts turn to next year, Madeleine Court's article on curriculum sequencing which first appeared in the EBEA journal is reproduced here.

The TAG deadline is on 18 June. The upload functionality is live on the Q-TAG portal meaning that you are now able to submit learner Q-TAGs. Meeting the 18 June deadline is vital to ensure that results are not delayed beyond the 10 and 12 August results days.

JCQ guidance

The Joint Council for Qualifications have released comprehensive guidance on the process for deriving grades this summer. This guidance, along with our support, will be an important document as centres work to determine grades for UK qualifications in summer 2021.There are also some JCQ FAQs.

Grade Submission System

The teacher assessed grades portal is now available to use.

We recommend that you log in at your earliest convenience and check that your login and user profiles are correct for those staff that require access. Please also check that the candidate details and entries are correct and if there are any omissions or changes needed then please action them yourself via Edexcel Online or EDI. Should you discover any required changes after 18 June, please contact us as soon as possible via email to eprocessing@pearson.com.  

Templates are now available for you to download and add your teacher assessed grades. The resources below might be useful.

Submission of Evidence at Stage 3 (post 18 June)

Ofqual have confirmed that exam boards will review all grades as part of their quality assurance processes. The grades will also be an important factor that exam boards use to target their review of centre judgements.

Once the grades are received, every centre will be asked to provide samples of student work.

Exam boards will request at least the following evidence:

  • One A level subject (at least five students)
  • Two GCSE subjects, one of which is likely to be either English language or maths (at least five students for each).

Centres that offer only A levels or only GCSEs will be asked to submit only work for those qualifications.

The selected sample for your centre will be communicated via email from 21 June and needs to be submitted within 48 hours. We understand the pressure this places on centres and want to make sure that the process is as quick and efficient as possible, so we will be asking that evidence is provided in a digital format.

We will be releasing additional functionality for the submission of evidence to Pearson. All users within your centre that have the ‘Capture’ profile on Edexcel Online will be able to upload evidence via the same portal that you submitted your TAGs.

When accessing the TAG Portal, you will be presented with a new ‘Sample Upload’ menu item. On this page you will be presented with a list of the selected subjects and students against which you will be able to upload your sample files.

Further detailed guidance on the process for this, together with step-by-step instructions and the range of file types allowed will be published by mid-June so that you can familiarise yourself ahead of the window for submission of evidence.

JCQ have released an addendum about the stage 3 checks, which can be found on the JCQ website. We want to make sure the process is as efficient as possible and we will be asking that evidence is provided in a digital format. We will be providing further guidance about how this will need to be submitted to us.

We will follow a similar approach for our international general qualifications, including International GCSE and International AS/A Level.
Submission of Evidence for International centres

Ofqual have confirmed that exam boards will review all grades as part of their quality assurance processes for UK qualifications. For international qualifications, we are mirroring our approach to that of UK qualifications. We will be asking for the following to be submitted digitally to us as evidence. It will be for a maximum of five students in at least each of the following:

  • one International A level or AS Module
  • two International GCSE subjects.

Centres that offer only A levels/International A levels or only GCSEs/International GCSEs will be asked to submit only work for those qualifications. We will request the selected sample for your centre via email from 21 June and this needs to be submitted within two working days. We understand the pressure this places on centres and want to make sure that the process is as quick and efficient as possible, so we will be asking that evidence is provided in a digital format.

Appeals

On 8 June Ofqual and the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) published their guidance for appeals in 2021. These are important documents that outline the processes that will be in place for this summer’s appeals process.

You might find it helpful to start with the introduction for Heads of centre and senior leaders, at the start of the JCQ document, which highlights some activities which could be completed before the end of term to help reduce the number of appeals and to help ensure the appeals process runs smoothly.

We will follow the same principles for Pearson’s International GCSEs and International AS/A Levels. The document below provides a summary of the appeals process for these international qualifications and also provides information on where the appeals process will differ from the arrangements detailed in the JCQ document.

International qualification appeals should be submitted using the Pearson Appeals Portal. This will be accessed by centres via Edexcel Online (EOL). Applications to appeal should be submitted with the relevant supporting evidence for the appeal.

To help international centres navigate the JCQ guidance and understand what you need prepare for before grade submission, after grade submission and for results day, as well as what you need to share with students, we have put together a visual guide that you can download.

June 28-30 Three-Day Course For Teachers New To Business A Level

This course, run by Ian Marcouse, is for teachers preparing to teach Business A level for the first time. Additional Assessment Materials

These materials are available in the subject pages under ‘Summer 2021 assessment materials for centres’.

The additional assessment materials have been drawn from past paper content, from both published and unpublished material. A reminder of what this means below:

  • ‘Published’:  those materials publicly available on the Pearson website and
  • ‘Unpublished: ’those materials still under padlock to our centres (mainly papers from 2019/2020).

Question paper coverage is such that it allows us to draw upon our past paper content, without the need to supplement with new content.

The Additional Assessment Materials, are content organised to allow teachers the freedom to select and assess the content that they have taught their students. This should mean that teachers will have a flexible approach to assessing their students.

In order to use the organised content, teachers have been provided with a mapping grid that includes details on where this content has been drawn from, as well as information like which assessment objectives the question meets.

As suggested by the Secretary of State a proportion of this content will be drawn from unpublished materials (namely 2019/2020 papers).

The mark schemes for these questions will also be provided to teachers.

The use of additional assessment materials in assessing your students is optional. As stated in the Ofqual Consultation outcome 'It would therefore be potentially unfair to enforce compulsory use of these materials'.

Autumn Examination Series

Ofqual have confirmed arrangements for UK qualifications in an exceptional autumn series.

Students who receive a teacher assessed grade this summer will be eligible to take GCSE exams in the same subject in autumn 2021.

Ofqual has also decided that:

  • Exam boards will have to offer exams in all GCSE subjects
  • Exams will be in their normal format, with no adaptations made.
  • Grades will be determined by a student’s performance in an exam for all subjects, except for art and design qualifications.
  • GCSE exams will take place in November and December.

Training: 1 July 16.00-18.00

This online event is designed for teachers who are moving to Edexcel or delivering the Pearson Edexcel specification for the first time.This will support you in getting ready to teach the GCSE (9-1) Business specification.

Online events are a great way to train the whole department, you can do this by simply projecting the session onto a whiteboard rather than placing multiple bookings.

During the session you will:

- Consider the structure, content and assessment of this new qualification, and the support available to guide you through the changes

- Explore possible teaching and delivery strategies for the new qualification

- Review the new content in the specification and exam techniques

- Explore the points-based mark schemes

- Explore the levels-based mark schemes

- Have the opportunity to network via the chat facility

The content of this event is based on the reformed specification for first teaching from September 2017. Pearson has reviewed the format and content of all its training events to ensure the security of its examinations cannot be compromised.

Unseen assessments

Following the end of the unseen assessment window, all mark schemes and other relevant assessment related materials are now available. These can now be found on the subject pages of our website under the ‘June 2021’ materials.

We are also marking all of the unseen assessments that we have received before 1 June. We will be returning marks to you via Edexcel Online as soon as they become available so please check your Edexcel Online accounts for these. We will be returning all marks to you by 11 June.

As mentioned previously, we will not be issuing grade boundaries for these. Where you are using the unseen assessments or other mock materials to support grading decisions, please ensure that the standard that is being applied is that of the 2017-2019 series as stated within the international guidance. Grade boundaries from 2020 and 2021 should be used with caution given the a-typical nature of these series.

Further Support Materials

The Further Assessment Materials contain short papers focusing on key areas of the specification. Each paper contains two questions, a mark scheme and annotated exemplar answers.

The first question is always a 4 mark question to support students with answering concisely. These questions test Knowledge [K], Application [P] and Analysis [An] of Themes 1 to 4. The mark schemes gives indicative content for appropriate responses.

The second questions are extended questions with marks ranging from 8 to 12 marks. These questions test the breadth and depth of students' knowledge and understanding, and cover Themes 1 to 4. Questions focused on Themes 1 and 2 are aimed at testing students' knowledge of core business concepts and applying them to business contexts. Questions aimed at Themes 3 and 4 are intended to test students' ability to respond to more complex business information, requiring them to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues.

The annotated answers show how marks have been applied to the exemplar responses. These exemplar responses are not definitive and other answers are acceptable, as long as they satisfy application against the business context.

Autumn Examination Series

How the Fixed UMS will work

Pearson’s approach for IAS/IAL qualifications for May/June 2021 is for centres to provide letter grades by unit. The unit results from this series will have associated UMS scores so that they can be aggregated with both existing unit results from prior exam series and unit results from future exam series.

    Welcome to this April 2024 update.

    This update includes news of two Component 3 training events for the Tech Award this month.  There is also information about the January 2024 Tech Award results including the grade boundaries, claiming certification, and entering for resits.

    The deadline for the submission of work via Learner Work Transfer for the BTEC Tech Awards is now 15 May 2024 (extended from 1 May 2024).

    The deadline for the submission of work via Learner Work Transfer for the BTEC Tech Awards is now 15 May 2024 (extended from 1 May 2024).

    This update also includes news of two training events for the Tech Award before Easter about the internally assessed components, and one event after Easter about Component 3.  There is also information about claiming certification and entering for resits.
