April 2023 BTEC Business update

Welcome to this April update!

There is a lot of news about the Tech Award this month with advice on how to apply for an extension for this window, as well as the extra time in future PSA windows. (Please see the Tech Award section below).  For the Legacy Tech Award, the entry deadline for component 3 resits has been extended to 20 April.

Please do read the JCQ guidance on the use of AI in assignments.

We don't have any new information on the Level 3 reforms, but an event has been scheduled for May when we hope to know more.

The provisional winter 2024 timetable is now available, and you are invited to provide feedback on the dates.

There are no Igniting Enterprise webinars this month, but we do have two in May (both advertised below) and the Be The Future social enterprise challenge is now up and running with a deadline in June.

BTEC Assessment 2023

On 28 March 2023, the Joint Council for qualifications published guidance about the use of artifical intelligence (AI) in assessments.

The JCQ AI Use in Assessments: Protecting the Integrity of Qualifications guidance is intended to provide teachers and assessors involved in delivering JCQ qualifications with the important information they need to manage the use of AI in assessments.

This guidance applies to all our qualifications including BTEC qualifications.

Please do take a look at this guidance.

The teaching, learning and assessment page for 2022-23 will keep you up to date with the latest news and information to support you delivering BTEC qualifications.

This guide provides learners and parents with information about this year’s arrangements for qualifications regulated by Ofqual.

We have published an updated version of the BTEC Instructions for Conducting External Assessments (ICEA) document.

This document provides you with the information you need to carry out external assessments, including who's responsible at each stage and additional advice around best practices, for BTEC Firsts, Tech Awards, Technicals and Nationals.

Please also refer to the individual subject administrative support guides (ASGs), which you can locate within the Course Materials section of each subject area.

For additional information, see our BTEC External Assessments article.

The Level 3 reforms

This page provides an overview of the reforms and will be updated as and when new information becomes available.

As part of the Level 3 Vocational Qualification reforms we would like to invite you to help influence the next generation of BTEC Nationals. We want to ensure we capture the teacher and learner voice in our qualifications and support materials.

This is your opportunity to have your say and get involved.

The funding guides below for 16-19 year olds give you a comprehensive view of funding for 2022/23 – 2024/25. This will give you clarity on how the recent updates on funding for BTEC Level 3 affect your centre and learners.

These guides take us up to the cohort starting in September 2024.

Please note that the situation in England, Northern Ireland and Wales is not necessarily the same for all sectors so please do check the correct file.

BTEC Nationals

The Admin Support Guides set out the procedures to follow during Parts A and B of Units 2 and 6, as well as how to run Unt 7.

To ensure that all learners who undertook the assessment were treated fairly, we took steps, working with our senior examining team, to make accommodations within the mark scheme. We worked with the wider examining team to ensure that these were understood and applied consistently. As a result, we are confident that the potential adverse effect caused to learners, as a result of the issues, have been effectively mitigated. In order to provide you with more detailed information the Lead Examiner has detailed the actions within their report, and we would encourage you to access this Lead Examiner report, along with the final mark scheme.

The assessment format of Unit 2 (Developing a Marketing Campaign) changed from January 2022.

This unit (31489H) forms part of the external assessment on the

  • Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Business
  • Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Enterprise & Entrepreneurship

This overview summarises the key changes.

The two resources for open evenings are:

  • BTEC Works
  • Routes  to Success

This Routes to Success page could be useful in informing conversations at open evenings and when discussing next steps with learners.

Visit Routes to success.

BTEC works is designed to help you have conversations with learners and parents about next steps.

We are planning the development of a new BTEC National in Sustainability that will focus on environment, economy and society.
