‘FEFE BTEC’ is a free-to-play, vampire-themed mobile digital game to support the development of accounting and finance literacy, which has been specifically designed to support Unit 3 of the Pearson BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Business and Enterprise & Entrepreneurship.

‘FEFE BTEC’ can be played on iPhones and Android phones and can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.

The ‘FEFE BTEC’ game provides an engaging and fun way to promote student learning and build confidence in the form, content and terminology of financial statements. It also develops broader business, commercial, ethical and risk awareness. The game allows students to practise their accounting skills and provides them with immediate feedback on their learning.

Playing the game

‘FEFE BTEC’ puts the student in the role of the owner-manager of a retail start-up business who runs their business over a series of ‘simulated months’ by responding to events, making business decisions, interpreting financial information and completing timed multiple-choice quizzes.

The bookkeeping option is automatically disabled so that all the bookkeeping is done for the student.

Once the user has successfully proved their accounting and finance literacy, they progress to the next Game Level which unlocks new business features, new financial data and new challenges. There are four levels.

Game level Business structure Target
Level 0 Trainee Sole trader A positive cash balance
Level 1 Apprentice Sole trader A revenue target
Level 2 Technician Sole trader A profit target
Level 3 Master Limited company A ROCE target

‘FEFE BTEC’ is an adapted version of the original ‘Count FEFE’ game which was the main output of the ‘Financial Education for Future Entrepreneurs’ (‘FEFE’) project, and which was created by Aston Business School and Elearning Studios. The FEFE project was funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.

The FEFE site also has country guides to the financial, legal, tax and other aspects of setting up and running a business in Austria, Cyprus and Spain which might be useful for Unit 5.
