Hello Everyone,

With the new school term well under way, I’d like to let you know of some developments with our BTEC Nationals in CPLD suite of qualifications, as well as give you all the information you need to make sure you register your learners on the right qualification for them.

The table below shows which qualification(s) you should be registering on, according to your centre needs.

Centre Scenario
Suggested Qualification from September 2013
  • Currently teaching BTEC Level 3 National in Children’s Care, Learning and Development
  • Need a qualification that provides progression to Higher Education
  • Need a qualification that is full and relevant (Certificate (720 GLH) or Diploma (1080 GLH) sizes only).
Continue teaching Level 3 BTEC National Children’s Care, Learning and Development.
  • Not currently teaching BTEC
  • Looking to introduce a qualification (no more than 540 GLH) alongside other qualifications
  • Want a qualification that offers progression to Higher Education.
BTEC Level 3 National in Health and Social Care (Certificate, Subsidiary Diploma, 90-credit Diploma).
  • Has 19+ learners looking to go directly into employment
  • Offering qualification as part of an apprenticeship
  • Qualification delivered in the workplace.
Offer the Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce (CYPW).
  • Currently delivering combined assessment of CYPW and CPLD
  • Learners that want to progress into Higher Education or employment
  • Need an up-to-date early years course.
Continue combined assessment of CYPW and CPLD.

The BTEC National in Children’s Care Learning and Development has been extended to August 2014 so you can still register learners this year if that’s the most appropriate qualification for your learners.

Looking forward to September 2014

The result of the recent Government consultation into Early Years Education means that the criteria for childcare qualifications will change from September 2014. To meet the recommendations from the consultation, all awarding organisations, including Pearson, will be redeveloping their Level 3 childcare qualifications. This means that all centres will need to start offering a new qualification from September 2014. We’re currently developing the new EYE qualification and will be in touch again as soon as the draft specification is available, which we anticipate will be early in the new year. We are confident that this new qualification will carry a licence to practice, so if this is an important consideration in your centre, you won’t need to also deliver CYPW (which is currently the case).
