News and updates about BTEC Higher Nationals for August 2021
Using UTAGs to award students this summer
Earlier this year, we asked centres to use, where eligible, Unit Level Teacher Assessed Grades (UTAGs) for awarding students on Higher National qualifications this summer.
- use UTAGs, where eligible, for assessments that were due to take place between 1 August 2020 - 31 August 2021
- confirm all UTAG decisions through your Assessment Board(s), with the External Examiner sign off of your grades and minutes, and claim them via Edexcel Online, by 30 September 2021 .
- use the ‘Z’ function when claiming UTAGs on Edexcel Online.
Please note that, following the recent Ofqual consultation, awarding bodies have received confirmation that Ofqual will withdraw designation of Category B as of 1 September 2021. This means that for the 2021–2022 academic year teacher-assessed grades will not be available.
Ofqual’s announcement means that in the upcoming academic year, all results should be awarded based on summative assessment in the usual way.
Upskill with Amazon Web Services
Amazon Web Services (AWS) are providing Higher National tutors free access to resources to help you develop your knowledge about cloud computing. There are two options available:
- Cloud 101: a course that will get you going with cloud, available as part of our support pack via AWS Educate.
- AWS Academy: a programme which aims to put educators at the forefront of cloud innovation.
Both courses will build your knowledge, helping you prepare to deliver Higher Nationals in Cloud Computing.
More than a qualification
Higher Nationals are more just a collection of units. We want students who complete our qualifications to be recognised for their achievements and progress into the world of work with confidence.
We created the Progression Hub on HN Global, which is full of resources, tools and industry guidance, to help inspire students on their Higher National journey and beyond.
New, self-paced training for Public Services
Back in June we released new self-paced Getting Ready to Teach training for Higher Nationals in Art and Design, Computing, Construction and Engineering.
We're excited to let you know that we have just added another module for HNs in Public Services.
New internal verification templates
We have created new internal verification templates to support the new AAB approach, and EAB approach to assessment for Higher Nationals.
New assessment approach for HNs in Business
Authorised Assignment Briefs (AABs) are now available for HNs in Business (2021), to support centres with their assessment strategy. You can find out more about AABs and how to make the most out of them in our upcoming training:
