The suite of qualifications includes:

  • Construction Management
  • Architectural Technology
  • Modern Methods of Construction
  • Quantity Surveying

This new approval system, based on employer-led standards, was created after the Department for Education’s response to Reforming Higher Technical Education – July 2020 emphasised the need for prestigious qualifications that meet employer needs (at levels 4 and 5).

Pearson have been active in this space for a number of years, especially within the construction sector, seeing over 20,000 registrations worldwide for the HNC (L4) and HND (L5) over the past 5 years. However, we agree that there is a need and opportunity for more young people and adults to be undertaking Higher Technical Education courses in future, which is why we are committed to making sure our BTEC Higher National qualifications are a high-value choice for individuals.

Rebecca Mameli, Head of Research and Qualification Development, Pearson said:

"Pearson are committed to high quality higher technical training for the construction workforce both in the UK and internationally. The successful approval of these BTEC Higher National qualifications as Higher Technical Qualifications is the latest landmark in that commitment.
Our BTEC Higher Nationals in Construction Management, Architectural Technology, Modern Methods of Construction and Quantity Surveying were developed in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders including employers, professional bodies and providers of HTQ to ensure their currency for today's construction industry. We hope that the HTQ quality mark will support students in making the best choice in terms of their construction education."

John Barfoot Learning, Education and Academic director with the Chartered Association of Building Engineers said:

“I have worked with the HN team at Pearson for over 5 years, and most recently we have been involved with the review of the BTEC Higher National suite of courses in construction and the built environment and the submission to IfATE.
The BTEC Higher Nationals and their alignment to the recognised Occupational Standards will go a long way to meet the education needs of the current and future workforces in the built environment as we face the challenges of climate change.
It has been brilliant to able to work with Pearson on HTQs and we wish them and future learners’ success, and look forward to welcoming much needed graduates from HTQs into exciting careers in the built environment and into membership of CABE“

We will notify all centres once the specifications are available on the Pearson qualifications website.
