This document provides information on the processes and the procedures for the practical moderation (Component 3) for GCSE and GCE PE.

This qualification will be graded, awarded and certificated to comply with the requirements of Ofqual's General Conditions of Recognition.

The raw marks for Components 1, 2, 3 and 4 in this qualification will be scaled by Pearson to represent the relative weighting of 36% for Component 1, 24% for Component 2, 30% for Component 3 and 10% for Component 4. For components 3 and 4, marks submitted by the centre should be in raw marks based on the relevant assessment criteria grids.

Therefore the total will be out of 350 and for each component you must multiply the raw mark by the respective scaling factor e.g. if a candidate achieve the following raw marks.

Component 1 – 70 marks
Component 2 - 60 marks
Component 3 – 100 marks
Component 4 – 18 marks

The overall subject mark would be,

Component 1 - 70 * 1.400 = 98
Component 2 – 60 * 1.200 = 72
Component 3 – 100 * 1.00 = 100
Component 4 – 18 * 1.750 = 31.5

In total the candidate has achieved 98+72+100+31.5 = 301.5 – rounded up to 302.

When the grade boundaries are set you will see the candidates overall grade.

This GCSE qualification will be graded and certificated on a nine-grade scale from 9 to 1 using the total subject mark where 9 is the highest grade. Individual components are not graded.

Students whose level of achievement is below the minimum judged by Pearson to be of sufficient standard to be recorded on a certificate will receive an unclassified U result.
