The end-point assessment consists of the following two assessment components:

  • Knowledge test comprising short answer questions based on scenarios encountered in the workplace
  • Practical test consisting of activities observed by the assessor relating to the skills requirements in the apprenticeship standard.

The overall apprenticeship is graded as Pass/Distinction, based on the apprentice’s combined achievement of the specified grading criteria across the two assessment components.

Overall EPA is graded as Pass/Distinction, and the two assessment components are separately graded too.

EPA specification changes

From 1 January 2021, all apprentices will be assessed under the new specification and assessment requirements, following changes agreed by NASR, the EQA body.

This specifies achievement of 100% of criteria in the practical task to achieve at each grade (pass or distinction) and includes a new list of evidence requirements for distinction performance in the practical task.

Any apprentices taking their assessment prior to 31 December 2020 should remain on the previous version of the specification:

Our range of EPA resources such as EPA specification, additional resources document and practice knowledge test are designed to enhance learners’ knowledge and/or hone essential skills required.

They are available to our customers who have signed up to Pearson EPA and include information on:

  • Structure
  • Grading
  • Gateway requirements
  • Assessment content
  • Evidence requirement for each component

We have designed a step-by-step guide, with signposts to our key supporting information, resources and services available at every stage of the process.
